Bivins Orthodontics Patient Information

Schedule Your Complimentary Consultation

One of our most important goals at Bivins Orthodontics is to always keep our patients informed about orthodontic treatments, processes, and all of the latest information available concerning orthodontics. We are experts who value transparency and education for our Chesapeake community.

While we provide you with the best orthodontic care, you can rest assured you’ll know what to expect every step of the way.

What to Expect During Your First Visit

Your initial visit is when we’ll get to know you and your orthodontic goals. This thorough one-hour visit will be key to discovering the best treatment plan to suit your orthodontic needs. You’re encouraged to share any concerns and desires you have for your smile, so we can create the perfect treatment plan for you.

During your first visit, our experienced team will capture images of your teeth and surround oral structures using the latest technology, like the iTero Element Scanner. From there, our Treatment Coordinator will go over the images with you, and then update Dr. Bivins with their findings. Next, you’ll meet Dr. Bivins, and he will discuss in more detail your images, his findings, and your treatment options.

If Dr. Bivins finds that treatment is necessary, he’ll give you an in-depth rundown of what your next steps will be. We’ll then work with you to schedule your first appointment and discuss financial information. Depending on your unique treatment plan, you may even be able to start treatment the same day!

Some common questions that we’ll answer during your first visit are:
  • Are there any specific orthodontic conditions that can be addressed?
  • Is it necessary to start treatment immediately, or should it be postponed until appropriate growth, tooth eruption, or other factors occur?
  • What are the proposed treatment methods for correcting the issue at hand?
  • Will it be necessary to extract any permanent teeth during the process?
  • How long will my treatment last?
  • What will be the approximate cost for my treatment?
  • What payment options are available for me to consider?

Orthodontic Emergency Information

When adapting to your new braces, clear aligners, or any orthodontic treatment, it is not uncommon to experience minor discomfort when appliances are first put on; mild aches are also common as your teeth begin to shift into their new positions. However, you can find comfort in knowing that true orthodontic emergencies are rare.

Should you think you are experiencing an orthodontic emergency, first, you should assess the severity of your issue: Is it an urgent situation necessitating immediate professional attention or a minor problem that can be temporarily self-managed until you can visit our office?

Minor Orthodontic Issues

Most of the problems you’ll face during your treatment will be minor. These can include loose brackets or bands, poking wires, and general tooth discomfort or loosening. These issues do not require immediate attention and can be resolved during your next appointment.

If you are experiencing any of those minor issues, you can always give us a call to find out ways to alleviate your discomfort until your appointment.

True Orthodontic Emergencies

Genuine emergencies are uncommon, but can include:

  • Infections or swelling in the gums, mouth, or face
  • Injuries to the teeth, mouth, or face
  • Intense and unmanageable discomfort or pain

If you experience any of the above issues, you should seek help immediately. The best place to start is with your regular dentist, but you should go to an emergency room if the matter is urgent.

It’s important to keep Dr. Bivins informed of any issues you experience, major or minor, so that he can make any necessary adjustments and keep your orthodontic treatment on track.
